Moxa/ Healing with Fire

Moxa is an herb obtained from the leaves of the plant Artemisia vulgaris. When moxa is dried it has a spongy feel. Moxa is lit and placed on acupuncture points, or painful sites. When the patient feels a warm sensation the moxa is removed, heat penetrates into the acupuncture point, or muscles. According to Traditional Chinese medicine moxa is used for the following effects: to increase circulation of blood and Qi in the acupuncture meridians, help to heal sore muscles, body aches and pain and to lift the spirit.

Cupping

Gwyneth Paltrow caused quite a stir at a New York film festival when she wore a low cut dress revealing red circles on her back. Now we get frequent calls about cupping so let set the record straight. Cupping is not used for detoxification it’s primarily used to reduce pain and inflammation in the muscles. It is also beneficial for respiratory ailments such a chronic cough with phlegm.

Cupping has been practiced for thousands of years as a treatment for chronic disease and pain. We use glass firer cups that are placed on the skin creating a vacuum. Cupping stimulates the flow of blood and Qi, into the painful muscles thereby relieving pain and inflammation.

Gua Sha

Arya Nielsen PhD the following is from here website.

Gua sha is a healing technique of traditional East Asian medicine. Sometimes called “coining, spooning or scraping”, Gua sha is defined as instrument-assisited unidirectional press-stroking of a lubricated area of the body surface to intentionally create transitory therapeuitc petechiae called ‘sha’ representing extravasation of blood in the subcutis.

Modern research shows Gua sha produces an anti-inflammatory and immune protective effect that persists for days follwing a single Gua sha treatment. This accounts for its effect on Pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, wheeze, nausea and vomiting etc., and why Gua sha is effective in acute and chronic internal organ disorders including liver inflamation in hepatitis.

Arya Nielsen PhD is highly experienced acupuncturist, writer, and instructor. She is know as the most knowledge acupuncturist using Gau sha. You can go to her webiste Guasha.com for more information.
